At 8:52 a.m.,  a Salem Police Officer was alerted by a stolen vehicle tracking device on his cruiser that a 2010 Honda Accord that had been reported stolen out of Haverhill was possibly in the area. Upon investigation, police located the vehicle near the Park View Inn on Route 28.

When officers approached the vehicle, the driver, later identified as CROMER drove away and behind a building on the lawn, nearly striking an employee of the inn. He continued driving in the parking lot, striking a parked vehicle and two Salem Police Cruisers. One cruiser has been taken out of service for repairs following the crash, and the second sustained minor damage. The parked vehicle in the lot sustained minor damage.

Salem Police followed CROMER through several parking lots as well as Cole’s Trailer Park and then southbound on Route 28. After striking a third police cruiser, CROMER came to a stop on the lawn of the entrance to Tuscan Village at the intersection of South Broadway and Central Street, and fled on foot northbound on Route 28. The cruiser sustained minor damage.

After a brief foot chase, CROMER was taken into custody by the Salem Police Department. Officers located a large bag of suspected heroin and/or fentanyl in the middle of Route 28 directly after CROMER was taken into custody.

One Salem Police Officer sustained an injury to his knee during this incident.

CROMER will be held at Rockingham County Superior Court in Brentwood pending arraignment. He is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 1.

During the vehicle and foot pursuit, Salem Police received information that a female passenger in the vehicle may have been a kidnapping victim, but investigating officers determined that was not the case.

No charges were filed against the female passenger.

Reports on social media also circulated on Monday morning reporting the sound of gunfire. At no point were any shots fired during this incident.

These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
