At about 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, Salem Police responded to Main Street in the area of Martin Avenue for a report that a pedestrian was struck while crossing the road. The victim, 68-year-old James Mikilitus, of Salem, was treated for severe injuries at the scene and later taken by medical helicopter to a Boston Hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the 2016 Dodge Charger that struck the victim remained at the scene and has cooperated with investigators.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Salem Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Team, but neither speed nor alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash.
