Police Identify Driver in Crash That Injured Child

Police Chief Joel Dolan reports that the Salem Police Department is identifying the driver whose car struck a home, seriously injuring a child inside.

On Saturday, July 10, at about 2 p.m., the Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls about a motor-vehicle crash on Silver Brook Road. First responders arrived to discover a 2019 Acura RDX traveling southbound on Silver Brook Road had left the road and crashed into a home, then multiple bushes and trees.

The male driver, SCOTT DOWD, AGE 37, of SALEM, was trapped inside the vehicle. First responders also learned that a young female child inside the home had been injured.

First responders removed DOWD from the vehicle through the windshield. The Salem Fire Department transported both DOWD and child to Lawrence General Hospital. The child was then transported by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital. DOWD was released several hours later. The child underwent emergency surgery, and is in stable condition.

A preliminary investigation by the Salem Police Department has determined that speed and alcohol were factors in this crash. The crash remains under investigation by the Salem Police Collison Analysis and Reconstruction Team (CAR), along with Salem Detectives, and more information about the results of the investigation will be released when it becomes available.
